Attention all Hungarian citizens! If you’re planning to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), there are some crucial updates you need to be aware of:
Visa Waiver Program Overview
Hungarian citizens can travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a U.S. visa. However, travelers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval before their journey. Note: Those entering under the VWP cannot change their status, extend their stay, work, or study in the U.S.
Recent Changes
Due to concerns arising from Hungary’s simplified naturalization process, the U.S. has made modifications to the VWP for Hungarian passport holders:
- The ESTA validity period is now reduced from two years to just one year.
- The ESTA for Hungarian passport holders will be limited to a single use.
These changes are effective immediately for new ESTA applications post-August 1, 2023. However, ESTA approvals granted before this date remain valid for two years and multiple entries.
Additional Restrictions
Travelers from VWP countries who have been in specific nations (like Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, etc.) after certain dates or are also nationals of these countries might not be eligible for the VWP. Such individuals will need to apply for a visa through the regular appointment process at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
